Going into the field of sales can be an exciting time. There are endless financial benefits that come with the hard work you must put in. Nonetheless, it is a fun and fast-paced field that can allow you to step out of your comfort zone and go beyond what you believed you were capable of. That being said, it is important to understand the kind of field you are entering in the event it may not be what you were anticipating. Here are some things you can expect when going to sales.
You want to be a sponge
There is going to be so much to learn and pick up when you first get into sales. Different sales pitches, techniques, things to say and do, how to present yourself and the product, etc. It may seem like a lot is being thrown at you at once and you might feel unprepared for the tasks at hand, but it is so crucial that you learn all you can and never stop learning. Everyday will bring something new that you can add to your arsenal for you to better perform your job so embrace that and come in everyday with an open mind ready to soak up as much knowledge as you possibly can. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions. You’re not going to know everything and you won’t be expected to know everything, so go ahead and ask as many questions as you want, especially when starting out.
You are going to face rejection
This is just the reality of going into sales. Not everyone is going to want the product you’re selling or even give you the time to really explain how it can benefit them. So one of the biggest things to consider when going into a sales job is: Expect a “no.” You will probably hear a hundred “no’s” before you ever get a “yes” but the most important thing is to not take it personally and simply use it as another learning experience.
Find your own technique
As mentioned earlier, you are going to be taught a lot of different ways of how people go about making sales, how they interact with prospective buyers, or how they handle rejection and rebuttals. It is up to you to take all the information you learn and make it your own and put your own approach to it. You can’t expect one particular method to work specifically for you unless you allow it by taking ownership of it and being able to put your stamp on it so that it feels more comfortable and natural.
You will have to stay on your toes
When working in sales, you have to be ready for any and all curve balls. This is why it is important to learn all that you can and be able to retain that information, so that when you get an unusual situation you are ready for it. There may be times when a customer gives you a rebuttal you aren’t used to and you will have to get creative and be able to work through it with them. This also requires you to be adaptable and able to adjust to any given situation. You can not go into every deal expecting it to go like the last and you have to be ready for whatever is put in front of you if you want to achieve success.
